Dog Soldier - Dog Soldier (1975 Great Uk Hard Rock With Keef Hartley & Miller Anderson - flac)

Drummer Keef Hartley and principal writer Miller Anderson had previous history in the great melting pot of British music's golden era, 1965-75, coming up through the blues boom through various line ups of the Keef Hartley band and this album in many ways represents a last attempt to crack the mainstream. The story did not have a happy ending and the band subsequently fell apart in disarray, but the album they left behind is an invigorating and fresh example of the state of rock music in 1975.
On first hearing the two lead tracks (released simultaneously on a single) certainly indicate British blues rock at it's finest, but as the album progresses it is clear that there are many more elements at work beneath the surface, making this a cliche free collection with much variety and strength. One could realistically have expected to hear this on John Peel, Alan Freeman and Bob Harris' shows simultaneously way back then. At times it is somewhat redolent of that other great unsung British band Patto, and also Paul Kossoff's solo work, at others an American west coast influence on the vocal harmonies can clearly be detected (this reportedly more at the the behest of the record company who were looking for a return on their considerable investment), and somehow this conflict actually benefits the album greatly giving it a bright disposition alongside somewhat darker and earthier guitar riffing. The closing tune, `Looks Like Rain', also gets a wonderful double take on this new edition on Esoteric with the inclusion of a bonus 15 minute early version which is every bit as good if not better than the album version.
The eight tracks on the original LP belong together as a coherent and accomplished whole, all are FM friendly and accessible yet `heavy' at the same time. The musicianship and vocals are first class, and as an example of the kind of music which people just do not make any more, this is perfect. If the sound of 1975 was British based, American-tinged rock, suitable for all manner of airplay outside the chart stations then this is pretty much it in a nutshell.(By Steve Dinsdale)

It's a nice disc. Kind of a looser version of Chicago. Less pretty vocals, but nice and lots of rock guitar licks and horns for a jazz/rock/blues fusion feel. This release is Keef Hartleys most Rock and Roll sounding as compared to the bluesey previous material. I feel that every song, including the bonus tracks is a keeper. Is it comparable to Magical Mystery Tour, No but its a fine peice of 1970 music that I'm pleased to own. Of all the Hartleys I own I must say this is overall the best.(Mark E. Hyken)

Someones Band - Someones Band (1970 uk great psych blues rock - flac)

This group got together via word of mouth and an advert in Melody Maker. They made a demo for Decca, who then sanctioned this album, which is now a monster rarity. Given that it was recorded in the course of a single night, it's a surprisingly polished and varied collection of progessive blues and soul. Also the influence of jazz, funk and African music is evident. Acoustic guitars meet wild electric guitar solos with a bluesy vocalist. One of my all-time favourites!! (Record Collector)

Tear Gas - Tear Gas (1971 outstanding uk hard rock - Flac)

Originally known as Mustard. Their first vocalist Andy Mulvey had previously been with The Poets. However, he was soon replaced by David Batchelor and around the same time Gilson Lavis (their original drummer, who later played with Squeeze) was replaced by Richard Monro from Ritchie Blackmore's Mandrake Root. This line-up recorded Piggy Go Getter, which made little impact. In 1970 Hugh McKenna took over Batchelor's vocal role and Ted McKenna (ex-Dream Police) relieved Monro on drums. They recorded a second album and tried to establish themselves on the underground scene but were going nowhere with their brand of tired boogie heavy rock, until they teamed up with Alex Harvey in August 1972 to become The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. This 1st album is a real MUST for those who like UK hardrock from the early 70s.

To boil it down into a couple sentences; if 70's R&B/blues is your thing, then this disc is a must have! At the very least, it can safely be labled as criminally forgotten.
First of all, Eric Quincy Tate was not an individual but rather a blue-eyed R&B outfit playing the club circuit in Texas when they were discovered. This swampy concoction, there first and only studio effort, was recorded at the "Sounds of Memphis" studio in 1971. The cast of characters was absolutely stellar! Three legends share production credit; Tony Joe White, Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd. The personnel roster boasted the Dixie Fliers(house band for the studio), overdubs by the Memphis Horns and a cameo appearance on slide by none other than Duane Allman. Only the drummer/vocalist and guitarist from the actual band were allowed to play on the LP; which gives the digitally remastered original tracks a tighter, more professional feel than the bonus tracks which feature the "real" band. The "demos" by the real band, which form the last part of the disc, have a looser, more naive and therefore sincere groove. The sound quality throughout is excellent.
All in all, this disc easily qualifies as one of the best 70's releases that you never heard of. The song writing is superior and the instrumental attack is engaging throughout.I strongly recommend it. (By C. Pumarejo "Bunny Rabid")
